Parshas Ki Savo - the essence of the mitzva of מקרא ביכורים
The passuk says in this week’s sedrah ( דברים כ"ו י"א ) וְשָׂמַחְתָּ בְכָל הַטּוֹב אֲשֶׁר נָתַן לְךָ ה' אֱלֹקֶיךָ וּלְבֵיתֶךָ אַתָּה וְהַלֵּוִי וְהַגֵּר אֲשֶׁר בְּקִרְבֶּךָ “And you shall rejoice in all the good that Hashem has given to you and to your household, you and the לוי and the גר who is in your midst.” Based on this passuk, the mishna says in ביכורים ( פרק א', משנה ו' ) מעצרת ועד החג מביא וקורא, מן החג ועד חנוכה מביא ואינו קורא ”From שבועות till סוכות he brings ביכורים and he reads the pessukim of מקרא ביכורים . From סוכות till חנוכה he brings ביכורים but does not read the pessukim of מקרא ביכורים .” The gemara in פסחים ( דף ל"ו ע"ב ) explains שמחה מיהא מיכתב כתיבא בהו דכתיב (דברים כ"ו, י"א) ושמחת בכל הטוב, ההוא לזמן שמחה הוא דאתא דתנן דמעצרת ועד החג מביא וקורא מהחג ועד חנוכה מביא ואינו קורא “Why does the passuk say שמחה regarding ביכורים ? To teach you that you only read the pessukim of מקרא
