Parshas Naso - the prohibition for one Levi to do work assigned to another Levi

The passuk says in this week’s sedrah (4:23) From 30 years old and upwards until the age of 50 you should count them, all who are subject to work in the performance of tasks required for the ohel mo’ed . The Medrash Rabbah comments on this passuk “All who are subject to work,” this refers to the Levi’im who opened and closed the gates of the בית המקדש . “In the performance of tasks,” this refers to the Levi’im who would sing when the korbanos were brought. In other words, different Levi’im were assigned to different specific tasks in the בית המקדש . The gemara in Eruchin (11b) explains that because the Levi’im were assigned to specific tasks, it was אסור for one Levi to perform the work of a different Levi. The gemara brings a machlokess if one Levi who perfo...

Parshas Naso - the difference between the kedushas ha'nmishkan and the kedusha of the beis ha'mikdash

The same halachos apply to someone who inadvertently enters the עזרה and to someone who inadvertently enters new areas that have been added on to the עזרה . This is because the additional areas added on to the עזרה and Yerushalayim are added on with a king, a navi , the cohen gadol wearing the urim ve’tumim , with the sanhedrin of 71, with two קרבנות תודה and with the song of the Leviim. Beis Din would walk with the two קרבנות תודה after them and all of the benei   yisrael after them. The gemara says in Shevuos (14:) How do we know that we need all these in order to add on to the עזרה and Yerushal...

Nezirus Shimshon

In this week’s sedrah the Torah describes the halachos of nezirus . The Torah changes the title of the nazir as it relates the different halachos : The Torah begins by describing the issur on wine. Here the Torah describes the nazir as a nazir la’hashem . ... “A man or a woman who expresses a neder (promise) to become a nazir to Hashem. From wine and mead he should refrain, he should not drink wine vinegar or mead vinegar…” Then the Torah adds the issurim of not eating any part of the grape and not having a haircut. Here the Torah does not call him a nazir la’hashem , it merely refers to him as a nazir : However when the Torah adds the issur of not becoming tame le’mes , the Torah calls him...
